I churned out a lot of stories at Reuters. It’s a factory where versatility is paramount. You had to be able to cover a celebrity and a forest fire and a business story and a political development in the same day. Accuracy and speed (not necessarily in that order) took priority over style. The writing, indeed, was generally workmanlike, sometimes even dull. But never in my case! It was fun while it lasted.
