Australia. Great country, shame about the movie.

     More and more, I find myself walking out of movies long before the final credits roll. I lasted through 55 minutes of "Australia," the new big-budget movie starring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman, and directed by Baz Luhrmann. It really needed Crocodile Dundee in the cast, and a Midnight Oil soundtrack. Alas, this travesty is set during World War II, so such anachronisms might not have worked. It also needed subtitles, a straight leading man, and an attractive actress with working facial muscles.

Movie piracy is a good idea

Like many upstanding citizens, I used to think movie pirates should walk the plank. Now, I totally support their criminal endeavors. The moviegoing experience has become so hellish that I actually dread going to the cinema. If I do overcome my anxiety, I spend the duration of the screening on edge that someone behind will start talking, or that someone five rows in front will unwrap a funky burrito. And these are media screenings and movie premieres where one would expect industry attendees to observe basic rules of decency.

Soul icon Isaac Hayes dies in Memphis at 65

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Oscar-winning soul singer Isaac Hayes who, along with Al Green, James Brown and Stevie Wonder, was one of the dominant black artists in the early 1970s, died in Memphis on Sunday, his friend and former manager, Onzie Horne, said. Hayes was 65.

Soul singer Luther Vandross dead at 54

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Grammy-winning soul singer and songwriter Luther Vandross, who suffered a serious stroke two years ago as he was about to relaunch his career, died on Friday in a New Jersey hospital, officials said. He was 54. "Luther Vandross had a peaceful passing under the watchful eye of friends, family and the medical support team," said Rob Cavanaugh, a spokesman at JFK Medical Center in Edison, New Jersey.

John Phillips of Mamas and Papas dead at 65

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Rock and roll veteran John Phillips, the founder and main songwriter for the 1960's California pop group the Mamas and the Papas, has died of heart failure, his spokeswoman said. He was 65. Phillips, who received a liver transplant several years ago after years of drug and alcohol abuse, died at UCLA Medical Center on Sunday morning, surrounded by family and friends, spokeswoman Elizabeth Freund said.
